Entries now open for the 2021 Bioinformatics Awards!

To promote excellence, diversity and innovation in the field of bioinformatics, the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) created the SIB Bioinformatics Awards to acknowledge early career bioinformaticians and ground-breaking resources of national and international standing.

The Awards honour bioinformatics excellence in three categories and is currently seeking submissions for two award categories:

  • Early Career Bioinformatician Award
  • Swiss Bioinformatics Graduate Paper Award
  • Bioinformatics Resource Innovation Award

The awards will be assigned by an international Jury and announced during the 2021 [BC]2 Basel Computational Biology Conference, which will take place from 13-15 September 2021 in Basel, Switzerland.

Early Career Bioinformatician Award

Call for entries: 2 November 2020 – 31 January 2021

The Early Career Bioinformatician Award is an international award that recognises early careers who demonstrate excellence through one or several projects and/or papers in bioinformatics and/or computational biology. This encompasses original methodological contributions, as well as innovative in-silico analysis of biological sequences, structures or processes.

Swiss Bioinformatics Graduate Paper Award

Call for entries: 2 November 2020 – 31 January 2021

The Swiss Bioinformatics Graduate Paper Award recognises outstanding papers published by a graduate student in the area of bioinformatics and/or computational biology. This encompasses original methodological contributions, as well as innovative in-silico analysis of biological sequences, structures or processes

Who is eligible: the award is open to scientists currently carrying out a PhD or who obtained their PhD degree during the two years preceding the application deadline. The applicant must have studied in Switzerland for at least 6 months during their PhD. The paper must have been published or accepted for publication in a refereed journal at the application deadline. The candidate will need to detail their personal contribution to the paper, and in the case of co-first authorship they will need to clearly distinguish their contribution from other co-first authors.

Bioinformatics Resource Innovation Award

Call for entries: 9 November 2020 – 28 February 2021

The Bioinformatics Resource Innovation Award is an international award that recognises newly developed bioinformatics resources with an important impact on life science research or the clear potential to make such an impact.

Who is eligible: the award is open worldwide, to any new bioinformatics resource that is accessible online and has been formally published. The type of resource is not specified: it can be a database, an infrastructure, a code-base, an analysis framework, a visualisation tool, etc. The resource should be breaking new grounds conceptually and/or technically, and must have had its first publication within the past five years at the most. The award money is given to the principal investigator, but is meant to support the entire team involved in the bioinformatics resource; it should be used for the benefit of the resource and its further development.
