UNBOOUND Medical Technology SA has been awarded CHF 100,000 in FIF Seed Tech funding for its standardised olfactory assessment platform.

UNBOOUND Medical Technologies SA is a medtech startup and spin-off from The Rockefeller University (New York), developed in close collaboration with the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) and the University of Geneva. The company addresses a longstanding gap in clinical diagnostics: the lack of a standardised, universally comparable metric for assessing human olfaction. Existing olfactory tests are limited by cultural bias, manual processes, and biological variability, leaving clinicians without a reliable tool to assess patients across populations and geographies.

Led by Dr. Julien Wen Hsieh, UNBOOUND introduces SMELL-RS, a novel measure of human olfactory function that is comparable across individuals, populations, and countries, enabling more accurate clinical assessments and significantly reducing the risk of misdiagnosis. The technology has direct relevance to the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, where olfactory dysfunction is a recognised early biomarker.

The FoNGIT Innovation Fund (FIF) Seed Tech funding will help UNBOOUND develop its platform and move toward CE marking, a key step toward clinical adoption across European healthcare settings.
