Alcon Halts Intraocular Lens Programmes After $402 Million Writedown

Alcon, the Geneva-based global leader in eye care, announced on Monday evening that it is discontinuing its intraocular lens (IOL) programmes, technology it acquired through the 2019 purchase of PowerVision for $285 million. These lenses were primarily designed for use in cataract surgery, replacing the eye’s clouded natural lens.
Alcon has its global headquarters in Geneva and operates a manufacturing and research site in the canton of Fribourg, underscoring the company’s deep roots in Switzerland.
The PowerVision programmes “did not produce acceptable clinical outcomes in patients, particularly due to unpredictable and persistent post-operative visual outcomes in a subgroup of patients – issues that could not be resolved despite multiple development efforts”, Alcon emphasised on Monday evening.
The decision triggered a $402 million impairment charge, wiping out the Swiss Health Valley company’s earnings per share for the second quarter. The news is harsh, but not a catastrophe: Alcon’s share price has continued to rise, suggesting investors see the setback as a one-off rather than a sign of broader trouble.
That resilience is reinforced by Alcon’s broader innovation pipeline. Early July 2026, the company announced a non-exclusive collaboration with American company RxSight to jointly develop adjustable presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (PCIOLs), combining RxSight’s post-operative light-adjustable technology with Alcon’s PCIOL optical designs to let surgeons fine-tune visual outcomes after cataract surgery.
Under the deal, RxSight receives a $60 million upfront payment, with up to $140 million more tied to development and regulatory milestones; Alcon will lead global commercialization while RxSight handles development and manufacturing. The partnership suggests Alcon is moving quickly to rebuild momentum in the IOL space even as it winds down the PowerVision-derived programmes.
