ABCDx Secures Several Grants

ABCDx, a Geneva and Spain based Medtech company developing blood-based point-of-care diagnostics for acute care, has been awarded funding through Spain’s Red.IA Salud programme to accelerate development of EmboCheck, its next-generation solution for pulmonary embolism. The wider programme is worth around €3 million, with roughly €1.4 million in non-dilutive funding allocated to ABCDx.

EmboCheck is a rapid point-of-care solution combining blood biomarkers, clinical information and AI-based risk stratification to support the assessment of patients with suspected pulmonary embolism, particularly in emergency and pre-hospital settings. The funding will support further development of the biomarker panel, software and AI components, alongside clinical validation and regulatory work aimed at progressing EmboCheck towards future CE marking.

The award builds on ABCDx’s existing clinical and regulatory programmes for LVOCheck, its blood-based solution for identifying large-vessel occlusion stroke. Together, the two programmes reinforce ABCDx’s strategy of building a multi-indication point-of-care diagnostic platform, combining biomarkers, lateral-flow technologies, smartphone-based image analysis and clinical algorithms across acute neurological and cardiovascular conditions.

“This grant is an important milestone for ABCDx. It gives us the resources to accelerate EmboCheck while further developing the common technology platform behind our acute-care diagnostic products,” said Jean-Charles Sanchez, CEO and co-founder of ABCDx. “Pulmonary embolism remains a major diagnostic challenge, especially when rapid access to laboratory testing or imaging is limited. Our objective is to bring clinically useful information closer to the patient and earlier in the care pathway.”

In August, ABCDx also got the R+D Empresarials grant, awarded by ACCIÓ, the public agency of the Generalitat de Catalunya under the FEDER Catalunya 2021–2027 programme, the funding (amount undisclosed) contribute to the continued development of LVOCheck AI, an AI-supported clinical decision tool that integrates with the biomarker-based rapid test, a mobile app and a digital platform, as well as to the technical documentation to support future regulatory steps. The device is designed to help emergency medical teams identify patients with suspected large vessel occlusion stroke, one of the most severe forms of ischemic stroke, directly in the ambulance.
