The UNIFR spin-off created a digital health solution targeting overweight through neuroscience and is supported by Venture Kick.
More than 2 billion adults worldwide suffer from overweight and associated chronic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes. This public health problem is compounded by the failure of 80% of traditional interventions. Neuria, a health technology spin-off from the University of Fribourg, offers an innovative approach to this challenge with its patented brain recalibration platform.
The platform combines over 10 years of neuroscience research to target the food cravings at the root of overeating behaviors. Accessible via smartphone video games, it acts on the brain’s implicit processes to bring about lasting changes in behavior, without any conscious effort on the part of users. This method combines scientific advances with playful design, promoting lasting behavioral change in the rapidly expanding field of digital health.
Neuria aims to transform the weight loss app market, estimated at one billion Swiss francs, by offering sustainable solutions to overweight and obese individuals. With Europe and the United States as its main markets, the startup already has a sales pipeline of 52 million francs, largely via partnerships with insurers and obesity specialists. Its B2B model is based on a subscription fee of CHF 60 per month.
The Venture Kick funds will enable Neuria to complete the commercial alpha version of its platform, strengthen its team for sales and marketing efforts, and expand into the USA.
Founded at the University of Fribourg’s Laboratory for Neurorehabilitation Sciences, Neuria operates from two sites, Blue Factory in Fribourg and Biopôle in Lausanne. The company is led by Frédérik Plourde (CEO), Professor Lucas Spierer (CSO) and Dan Bourquin (CTO), with a multidisciplinary team combining scientific, clinical and technological expertise.
“Venture Kick’s support reflects our team’s commitment to transforming people’s lives. This funding has enabled us to create tangible value, forge strategic partnerships and consolidate our business model,” explains CEO Frédérik Plourde.
