Seprify and BIOGRUND Join Forces
Seprify and BIOGRUND have joined forces to introduce a mineral-free tablet coating solution designed specifically for nutraceutical applications. This innovation responds to both regulatory changes and growing consumer demand for simpler ingredient lists.
Moving Beyond Titanium Dioxide
For years, titanium dioxide (E171) has been widely used to achieve the bright white appearance of tablets. However, following its ban in the EU in 2022 and increasing scrutiny from consumers, manufacturers have been actively seeking effective alternatives.
The new solution integrates SilvaAlba™, a plant-based cellulose ingredient developed by Seprify, a University of Fribourg (UNIFR) spinoff and based today at Marly Innovation Center (Canton of Fribourg). Derived from renewable resources, it delivers strong whitening performance while eliminating the need for mineral-based additives such as titanium dioxide or calcium carbonate.
Performance Meets Simplicity
What sets this innovation apart is its ability to combine clean-label formulation with industrial performance. SilvaAlba™ offers:
- High whitening efficiency
- Improved pH stability compared to mineral alternatives
- Simplified formulations with fewer ingredients
- Regulatory familiarity, as it is based on microcrystalline cellulose
By incorporating this ingredient into its ready-to-use coating systems, BIOGRUND enables manufacturers to maintain processing efficiency while transitioning to more sustainable formulations.
From Innovation to Application
BIOGRUND’s expertise in ready-made coating systems ensures that this new technology is not just theoretical—it is ready for real-world use. Nutraceutical companies can already evaluate and test these coatings, making it easier to adopt mineral-free solutions at scale.
The partnership highlights a broader trend: innovation in materials science is increasingly being translated into practical tools that manufacturers can deploy quickly and confidently.
As the demand for clean-label products continues to grow, collaborations like this one are key to bridging the gap between scientific innovation and market-ready solutions.
