The clinic group is soon to be acquired by the Geneva-based shipping giant. The restructuring is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The Hirslanden private clinic group is to be taken over entirely by the shipping company MSC. According to an internal communication we have obtained, the change in the structure of Mediclinic Group – the parent company of the Swiss chain – is to take place “before the end of the last quarter of 2026.”
Hirslanden, which includes the Cecil and Bois-Cerf clinics in Lausanne, Les Grangettes and La Colline in Geneva, Les Tilleuls in Biel, and twelve other institutions, is expected to be wholly owned by the Geneva-based company, which is owned by the Aponte family, according to the announced plan.
“The aim of this transaction is to position the company so that it can continue to grow and serve patients in a world where private healthcare systems must adapt to numerous challenges and patient expectations,” reads the internal communication addressed to doctors and employees.
“Welcoming all employees into the future structures”
In addition to MSC’s takeover of Hirslanden, the plan envisages other structural changes. Remgro, the current owner of Hirslanden, would retain full ownership of Mediclinic Southern Africa, while Mediclinic and Remgro would maintain equal stakes in Mediclinic Middle East and Spire Healthcare.
“The project, currently an agreement in principle between the current owner Remgro, a vehicle of Australian-American billionaire Johann Rupert, and MSC, will result in a geographical separation of the hospital group’s activities,” observes L’Agefi.
“We will make every effort to accommodate all employees in the future structures or to explore reasonable alternatives,” Mediclinic’s management said in its internal communication. “For the time being, nothing will change. Governance and supervision will remain as they are until the transaction is completed,” it added.
