Biotools Community: A New Milestone for the Swiss Health Valley

Western Switzerland is taking a decisive step forward in strengthening its innovation ecosystem with the launch of the Biotools Community, a joint initiative by Innovaud, BioAlps and Biopôle Lausanne. This new platform aims to structure and accelerate a rapidly emerging segment of the life sciences industry, positioning the region as a European hub for biotools innovation.
Biotools companies occupy a unique and strategic position within the life sciences value chain. Rather than developing therapies themselves, they provide the technologies, instruments and platforms that enable breakthroughs in biotech, pharma and medtech. Their clients are research laboratories, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies—making them essential drivers of scientific progress.
Western Switzerland offers particularly favorable conditions for this model. Biotools companies benefit from shorter development cycles and faster market access, as they are generally not subject to the heavy regulatory pathways required for therapeutics. This allows them to scale more rapidly and to respond directly to the evolving needs of research and industry.
The region is already home to a number of highly promising ventures. Limula is developing automated solutions for cell and gene therapy manufacturing, while Bioscibex is transforming bioproduction through innovative bioreactor technologies. FluoSphera is pioneering 3D cell culture models to improve drug development predictability, and Ceidos is advancing automation in cell culture monitoring. The success of Lunaphore, acquired in 2024 by US-based Bio-Techne, and active in the spatial biology further highlights the strong growth potential of this segment.
Beyond individual success stories, the Biotools Community aims to connect companies, investors and industrial partners, while giving greater visibility to this category of innovators. Through networking, shared tools and ecosystem coordination, the initiative will help create critical mass and attract new players at the European level.
