The Vaud Cantonal Government has unanimously appointed Claire Charmet to head the Vaud University Hospital Center (CHUV). With fifteen years’ experience in hospital management, she will take up her post on 1 June 2025.
Claire Charmet, 41, has been head of the La Chaux-de-Fonds hospital site since 2020, and alternates every two years as president of the Réseau hospitalier neuchâtelois management board, the Conseil d’Etat announced on Thursday.
She succeeds Professor Nicolas Demartines, who will have acted as interim director from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024, following the resignation of the previous director Philippe Eckert.
The hiring process began in September 2024. It was conducted by a recruitment committee chaired by former State Councillor Philippe Leuba. A total of 52 applications of “impressive quality, from Switzerland and abroad” were received, said Leuba.
Claire Charmet’s candidacy was convincing thanks to her “undeniable managerial qualities and her ambition for the CHUV”, continued Philippe Leuba. She passed all the stages of a demanding recruitment process and was unanimously appointed by the committee.
Claire Charmet’s mission will be to maintain the CHUV’s level of excellence, and to implement major transformations, for example in terms of governance, in the demanding context of a return to financial equilibrium, notes the press release.
From 1 January to 31 May 2025, the hospital will be managed by a transitional organization. Members of the CHUV Executive Committee will take on additional tasks. The interim Director of Operations appointed this summer by the Council of State will chair the committee.
