Digital twins for stroke victims

Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève (HUG) and Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) will receive CHF 1.8 million from the Swiss Confederation and the EU to support a research project that aims to create digital twins of people who have suffered a stroke, in order to improve their personalised care.
Stroke is a leading cause of death, caused by either a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured aneurysm (hemorrhagic stroke). Despite advances in stroke understanding and treatment, current methods don’t fully capture individual patient nuances. Digital twins could personalise care by predicting disease risk, progression, and treatment outcomes.
The Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) and Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) are part of the GEMINI consortium, comprising 20 research institutions from Europe, the US, and Taiwan. GEMINI will validate digital twins for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke treatment, assessing the risk and potential outcomes of unruptured aneurysms. This project builds on the established collaboration between HUG’s NeuroCenter and ZHAW’s Center for Computational Health.
The project is funded by the Horizon Europe research program and led by experts from Amsterdam University Medical Center.
