SIB has launched a new Centre for Pathogen Bioinformatics, building on its contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Centre will offer expertise and services in computational pathogen research and surveillance to Swiss federal authorities and the global research community.
The Centre for Pathogen Bioinformatics’s goal is to ensure Switzerland remains a leader in pathogen bioinformatics, contributing to global pandemic preparedness.
The Centre will capitalize on tools developed during the pandemic, focusing on real-time data analysis and pathogen surveillance. It aims to support national and international public health strategies, with Christophe Dessimoz envisioning the Centre as a key partner for federal surveillance programs.
Initial funding has been secured through two grants: one from Swissuniversities to improve data interoperability and the other from the National Institutes of Health for FAIR infectious disease data sharing.
The Centre operates as a multi-site initiative, led by Aitana Neves as Managing Director, with a Steering Board and Advisory Board comprising experts in pathogen bioinformatics. The Centre’s mission is to maintain and expand pandemic-response infrastructures established during COVID-19.
