A joint initiative of EPFL and ETH Zurich, the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is expanding and taking up residence on the Biôpole campus.

Established in 2017 and split between the two universities’ cantons (Zurich and Vaud) as well as the canton of Aargau, the SDSC is now permanently headquartered north of Lausanne as a national center for data science. It currently employs 130 people, and will welcome a further 40 by 2028.

The SDSC is staffed by specialists in data science and artificial intelligence (AI). From harvesting to analysis to exploitation, it offers its services to industry, academic laboratories, hospitals, NGOs and public sector players.

One of the SDSC’s objectives is to provide expertise and skills to help companies develop their “data” strategy, as a kind of “coaching” in terms of data collection, management and analysis, explained Olivier Verscheure, Executive Director of the national center.

The canton of Vaud is also providing substantial support, to the tune of 7.5 million francs until 2028, to develop collaborative innovation projects in line with SDSC competencies, between research (UNIL, CHUV, HEIG-VD for example), industry (local SMEs for example) and the State.

Five projects will be supported per year, for amounts of between CHF 250,000 and 300,000 francs. They can cover a wide range of fields, including life sciences, healthcare, industry, energy, sustainability, environment, climate and digital transformation.
