Fribourg-based materials innovator Seprify has partnered with the Grolman Group to roll out its next-generation cellulose-based ingredient, SilvaLuma™, an alternative to titanium dioxide for coloring food or cosmetic products, across the European cosmetics and personal care market.

After more than 20 months of research, development, and validation, SilvaLuma™ is now entering commercial deployment, supporting SPF-boosting and mattifying performance in skincare and suncare formulations. The launch comes at a pivotal time for the industry, as European brands seek credible alternatives to conventional mineral and fossil-based functional ingredients — particularly amid increasing regulatory scrutiny, environmental concerns, and pressure to reduce UV filter loads.

Performance Meets Sustainability

SilvaLuma™ is designed to combine high formulation performance with a strong sustainability profile. As a cellulose-based ingredient, it reduces reliance on controversial UV filters and fossil-derived polymers while offering a favourable carbon footprint and alignment with circular economy principles.

“SilvaLuma addresses a clear need in SPF and complexion applications, where brands are looking for alternatives to conventional mineral solutions without compromising on formulation quality,” said Florian Grolman, Managing Director of Grolman Group KG.

Seprify will provide scientific expertise and manufacturing capabilities to support formulators during development and scale-up, while Grolman will lead market introduction across the EU, UK, and Turkey through its established pan-European cosmetics network.

A Platform for Circular Materials

The partnership reflects a shared ambition to accelerate the adoption of circular ingredient systems in cosmetics. SilvaLuma™ will be integrated into Grolman’s portfolio in Q1 2026, marking a significant milestone for Seprify’s broader cellulose technology platform — which is also being deployed in food and coatings applications.

“SilvaLuma was developed to deliver real functional benefits in cosmetics while avoiding the trade-offs often associated with fossil-based or mined ingredients,” said Lukas Schertel, CEO of Seprify AG. “Launching in Europe with the Grolman Group allows us to scale access in a structured and reliable way.”

With this collaboration, Swiss innovation in advanced bio-based materials is taking a major step toward widespread industrial adoption — supporting a more sustainable future for cosmetics formulation.
