Inaugurated on 1 June 2025, the Bladder Cancer Center is the eleventh interdisciplinary oncology center created at the University Hospital of Vaud (CHUV). It aims to improve the quality and safety of care by offering patients state-of-the-art treatment combining specialized surgery, innovative systemic therapies, and a rehabilitation programme.
Every year in Switzerland, bladder cancer affects around 1,300 people. This complex tumor is characterized by a high recurrence rate and the need for regular monitoring. Approximately 70% of patients have superficial tumors, which can usually be treated locally. However, in nearly one-third of cases, the disease infiltrates the muscle of the bladder wall. These so-called invasive forms are more serious and have a poorer prognosis. Treatment is generally based on a multimodal approach combining, depending on the case, complete removal of the bladder (cystectomy), systemic treatments such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy, and, in some situations, radiotherapy.
As part of the weekly interdisciplinary oncology conference (tumor board) at the new Bladder Cancer Center at the CHUV, urological surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nuclear medicine specialists, and specialized nurses discuss each case in order to develop the optimal treatment plan.
“In a field as complex as bladder cancer, pooling expertise is essential. This center not only improves the quality of medical decisions but also the patient experience. Patients feel better supported, even in situations where treatment options are limited,” says Dr. Ilaria Lucca, interim head of the CHUV’s urology department and medical director of the new Bladder Cancer Center.
In addition to clinical care, the Bladder Cancer Center is actively involved in clinical research projects aimed at developing new therapies and improving existing treatment protocols. It also offers training programmes for healthcare professionals.
