How AI can support research by extracting, analysing and compiling data

The following article is part of BioAlps’ testimonial series and was written by Mr Constant Ondo, CEO at PICC Solution. Our series aims to provide a platform for the different life sciences actors from western Switzerland, who are active in finding and developing solutions to fight against the new coronavirus, to share their experience.

Presentation of PICC Solution’s COVID-19 related activities

PICC Software collects, maps and retains knowledge to make it accessible to all. Using artificial intelligence and neural networks, it organises and fosters the collective intelligence of companies, NGOs and academic organisations to help them to reach their full potential.

The Great East region (in France) called on PICC Solution to analyse all contributions from working groups and citizens to support the recovery from the crisis caused by COVID-19. 22 thematic working groups were brought together, with nearly 600 people generating several thousand pages of reports.

In the span of two days, PICC analysed all the contributions, extracting 4’000 issues, 5’000 solutions and 14’000 relationships around the themes of: digital, support, ecology and governance.

For another project, PICC was used to scan and analyse over 20’000 medical research articles related to COVID-19 to extract problems and solutions.

Exogenous impact of COVID-19 on the company

With their employees having to work from home, more and more companies are waking up to the idea of capitalising on collective intelligence and showing interest in PICC. We have been able to work in domains where we previously didn’t have much access, such as government and health. With our proven track record, we expect to continue working in these new domains and expand our customer base within them.

Endogenous impact of COVID-19 on the company

Our R&D, algorithms and models actually benefitted from working on these COVID-19 related projects. The extra workload has pushed us 6 months ahead of schedule. These benefits are here to stay.
