The Geneva-based and FONGIT incubated startup revolutionizes biopharma cold chain logistics

Cria Technologies, is tackling one of the most pressing inefficiencies in the pharmaceutical and biotech cold chain: outdated, bulky, and fragile packaging systems that rely heavily on dry ice. These legacy solutions are increasingly inadequate for transporting emerging personalized therapies that require ultra-low temperatures.

The company’s founding team — Dr. Vittorio Palmieri (CERN physicist and serial entrepreneur), Giancarlo Mattiello (MEng, former strategy consultant), and Andrea Festa (MEng, former Kearney) — has developed Cria-Go, the world’s first shoulder-portable, temperature-controlled container that spans from –150°C to +8°C.

This patent-pending design, compatible with dry ice, liquid nitrogen, and Phase Change Materials (PCMs), eliminates the need for external crates and long pre-conditioning times. It is particularly suited for applications such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology sample transport, as well as fertility treatments — a market projected to grow at 20% CAGR, surpassing USD 10 billion by 2030.

Beyond its compact size, Cria-Go introduces a sustainable alternative to dry ice, addressing safety risks, regulatory hurdles, and environmental concerns. By using advanced PCMs, Cria ensures reliable temperature control while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of cold chain logistics.

With support from Venture Kick, Cria Technologies will accelerate pilot deployments with early customers, gather performance data, and advance towards certification — paving the way for a safer, greener, and more efficient future in biopharma logistics.
