Dr. Jasmine Abdulcadir (HUG) in collaboration with Prof. Daniel Huber (UNIGE), focuses on improving the understanding and evaluation of female genital sensitivity, a field still lacking in objective clinical tools—particularly in the context of female genital mutilation (FGM).

A pioneering portable, connected device will be developed to allow women to assess the sensitivity of their vulva and clitoris confidentially at home. This non-invasive tool will help support better diagnostic, surgical, and psychosexual care, especially for those affected by FGM—currently impacting over 230 million women and girls globally, including 600,000 in Europe and 24,600 in Switzerland.
“This is the first time we will be able to offer an objective, self-administered measure of genital sensory function,” explains Prof. Huber. The research also aims to explore how body perception influences sexual response and therapeutic outcomes.
While awareness of the clitoris has grown in recent years, significant gaps and taboos remain. “At HUG, nearly 50% of women initially considering reconstructive surgery after FGM ultimately decide against it thanks to therapeutic and psychosexual support,” notes Dr. Abdulcadir, from the Department of Gynaecology, University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG).

This ground-breaking project tackles a critical and sensitive public health issue, offering a unique intersection of neuroscience, technology, gynecology, and patient empowerment. The project will receive a CHF 700’000 grant from Fondation Leenaards.
