Three Swiss Health Valley research projects have been awarded the Prix Pfizer de la recherche biomédicale 2026, showcasing innovation across cancer immunotherapy, digital health, and personalized medicine. Each project received a CHF 20,000 grant.
Personalized cancer vaccine – HUG
A research team led by Nicolas Mach, together with Rémi Vernet and Eugenio Fernandez at the HUG – Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève and the Université de Genève, was awarded for developing a novel personalized therapeutic cancer vaccine.
The approach uses each patient’s own tumor material combined with an immune system activator to stimulate long-term anti-tumor immunity. A Phase 1 clinical study has demonstrated safety and tolerability, with early signs of therapeutic potential. This work represents over 15 years of translational research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with metastatic cancer. More information.
Digital therapy for obesity – UNIFR
At the Université de Fribourg, researchers Lucas Spierer and Frederik Plourde (BeweLab SA) were recognized for a clinically validated digital therapeutic to combat overweight and obesity.
Their mobile application uses neuroscience-based cognitive training embedded in video games to recalibrate the brain’s reward system and reduce unhealthy eating behaviors. Four randomized clinical trials involving more than 500 participants showed significant reductions in food cravings and sustained weight loss, opening a new path for non-pharmacological obesity treatment. Personalized medicine for inflammatory skin diseases – UNIL
A multidisciplinary team from the CHUV and the Université de Lausanne—Dr. Teofila Caplanusi Seremet, Dr. Jeremy Di Domizio, and data scientist Antoine Girardin—received the prize in the category Immunology / Infectious Diseases.
Their research, published in Nature Communications, identified immune signatures in skin tissue to better diagnose and personalize treatment for inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, and lupus, paving the way for more targeted and effective therapies. More information.
