Japonese company Takeda has reached an important milestone in Western Switzerland with the inauguration of a new aseptic filling facility in Neuchâtel — a major investment that strengthens both regional innovation and global access to life-changing therapies. With more than CHF 200 Million invested, this is the largest expansion ever made at the site.

Boosting global production capacity for rare disease treatments

The new facility features a cutting-edge aseptic filling line integrating formulation, filling, lyophilization, capping and automated visual inspection. This advanced infrastructure will support the production of therapies that benefit patients in over 80 countries, particularly those living with rare coagulation disorders. As part of Takeda’s “factory of the future” strategy, the site continues its digital transformation, placing automation and modern technologies at the center of operations.

A project celebrated by Swiss and Japanese authorities

The inauguration gathered key figures from both Switzerland and Japan, including Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and representatives of the Japanese embassy, highlighting the strategic importance of the Neuchâtel site for the region and beyond. The investment is part of a broader expansion program across Takeda’s global manufacturing network, including major developments in the United States.

Nearly three decades of innovation anchored in Neuchâtel

For almost 30 years, Takeda’s Neuchâtel facility has been dedicated to producing treatments for rare diseases, operating 24/7 and employing over 650 professionals, making it one of the canton’s top employers. More than half of the construction and engineering work for the new line was carried out with local partners — a testament to Takeda’s strong regional ties. The site also continues to advance its sustainability goals: since 2024, a 3.6 MW photovoltaic installation has supplied 25% of its electricity needs, contributing to Takeda’s ambition of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.

With this new investment, Takeda reinforces its mission: advancing science, expanding access to innovative treatments, and supporting the communities where it operates — in Switzerland and around the world.
